Kingston Wheelers Open 10 Mile Time Trial
Saturday 18 August 2007
It threatened to be a total wash-out, and it was certainly touch-and-go whether the race was going to go ahead, but in the end the Kingston Wheelers open ‘10’ was a big success and produced some superb times.
Short sharp showers broken up with steady drizzle combined with gusty crosswinds are not normally ideal conditions for producing fast times, but an estimated 20 percent of the 85 riders who raced on Saturday produced personal best times. David McGaw (Oxford Uni CC) fresh from beating Ben Instone produced an incredible 19:50 to win from Tim Bedingfield and John Tuckett (both AW Cycles) by close to a minute and so collected the £100 cash prize. Richard Simmons (London Dynamo) who had set the early best time of 20:55, and Jake Prior (VC St Raphael) completed the top 5.
Kingston Wheelers Daniel Sibbick and Adam Page finished sixth and seventh respectively, with Daniel not only setting a personal best of 21:04, but also getting his hands on two cash prizes for overall team (along with Adam and Lawrence Smith) and for fifth place (Jake Prior taking fastest veteran in the ages 40-59 category instead).
Also riding from the club was fast improving Steven Saunders, gearing up for Surrey League 3-day next weekend. Steven produced a new personal best time of 21:45 and this was a significant enough improvement to give him joint share of the best improvement prize along with Alex Eason (Chelmer CC).
In the female competition it was a battle between SIS team mates Lesley-Anne Walkling and Helen Carter as well as Maidenhead and Districts Danuta Tinn. Lesley-Anne took the prize with a great ride of 22:40, and with just 5 seconds separating second and third, it was a very close battle between Helen and Danuta.
Finally, in the veterans competition Jake Prior as previously mentioned took the 40-59 category from Mick St Leger (Sotonia CC) with 21:02, and in the 60+ category John Woodburn won comfortably from Michael Gowen by exactly a minute.
Many thanks to all that rode on Saturday and we hope to see you at the next Kingston Wheelers event – the John Bornhoft Memorial hill climb on Saturday 6 October at Leith Hill - to all those who rode and to the team of club members who promoted the race.
