Introducing...
Every month, we introduce one of the Kingston Wheelers. For December 2007, it's Ian Humphreys. From a cycling family, he joined the club in 1990 and has recently re-joined.
Name: Ian Humphreys
Age: 40
Significant Others: Soozie is my understanding other half and wife to be if we can set a date.
What made you start cycling? My Dad took me to his club meets (Festival Road CC) in the 70's. I wasn't a junior racer but just liked the buzz of going to races with him. Then in the late 80's and early 90's I got a mountain bike and that was it, I was road training and MTB racing.
Why did you join Kingston Wheelers? To meet like minded people, ride and chat bikes and have a bit of a laugh on odd nights out hopefully!
Date you joined the Club: 1990's first time then again October 07
What bike do you ride? My pride and joys are a Colnago arte road bike and a GT avalanche Pro MTB.
Give us a brief cycling background: The first time I joined the Wheelers was in 1990 when they met at HMP Latchmere. I was racing mountain bikes in those days and lived in New Malden, the club was local to me. I Raced a couple races under the name of Kingston Wheelers only to move away from New Malden and stop riding and racing. Now I'm back riding both road and MTB's just for fun and general fitness, not into racing anymore.
Who is your inspiration? Laurent Jalabert, Greg Lemond and Robert Millar and my dad.
What was your best day on the bike? The British MTB championships at Malvern in 1991, I raced expert and finished 52nd out of 105. I have to add the 105 as most people say was there 53 people racing.
What was your worst day on the bike? 1. In the wet sliding across the roundabout by Richmond gate (bad road rash)
2. Punched a car for trying to take me off only to have him drive at me (I won't do that again)
What is your favourite cycling food? Italian, French, curry, and chicken & chips.
Where is your favourite cycling location? Easy, anywhere in the Dorking area, road or MTB's or old faithful, Richmond park.
Most likely to say: "Just one more for the road!"
Least likely to say: "Punch that car."
