Weird that you should start this thread today Henry. I spoke to Camille McMillan on Twitter about how he was inspired to get into cycling and it made me remember the time I saw Roche collapse on La Plagne after chasing down Delgado. It just blew my mind.
http://www.vulpine.cc/Blog/familyfriends/stephen-roche-changed-my-life
I'm not as obsessively racing/pro cycling focused now, but cycling is and always has, and I hope always will be, a huge part of my life. Its the thread that ties together my life.

To escape from everything and everyone and explore new places. Anything else to do with cycling is a bonus.

Best ride of 2011: Guillestre to Col de l'Izoard with my brother last year. Felt like shit until the last 2km, but it was still wonderful.

For me it was faster and cheaper than other methods of getting to work where I was living, and more reliable, as I've moved around I've kept it up for health and fitness reasons.

Where I started the longer distance commuting (23km each way), cycling was also more flexible, as the local bus company had a serious attitude problem to passengers, and an inflexible timetable with limited services after 6pm which just didn't suit me. I found it was faster and more reliable to go door to door on the bike than pay for this poor quality, inflexible yet expensive 'service'.

Also, I don't have the exclusive use of a car, and unlike the train I can't miss catching my bike by a minute then have a 29 minute wait for the next one, or be held up in a queue to buy a ticket for my bike and again miss the train. Or find that due to some minor delay I miss a connection and will then have to wait for the next one to hopefully show up.

The bike also has only on very few occasions had to apologise for the delay to my journey for its failure to perform as advertised! I've never had a problem with leaves on the line, points or signals failures, vandalism, or failure to find staff to operate the bike.

I always get a seat!

Best of all, a week of cycling to work at 10p a mile only costs £19.20, whereas the train would cost £52.50.

the official line is that you have to use it to commute at least 3 days a week so that would rule out tt bikes, framesets etc. the reality is that ive never heard of any shop sticking to that...
Good luck all. Will do a report later assuming I still have use of my fingers.
