Yea, it was quite chilly and first long ride for me this year. Thanks to Richard for my tow back from Seale.

Well done to Polly for completing her first ever sportive.

And commiserations to everyone one involved in that unspeakable incident with the idiot in the car. May the driver rot in jail for a long time!!

Chris

P.S. And congrats to Geraint too for his first sportive.

Boy was that tough, including there and back 175km!
I rode 2/3rds of it on my own lacking the power and stamina, in that hideous headwind, to stay with Dave and Nick for more than a few miles after the first tea stop. Sometimes it felt like I was going backwards! Feel very good about completing it though. That's my first one ticked off.

This is second hand, Dan and Cath were closer to the actual incident.

Apparently he drove past a group of cyclists and shouted something like 'F**king cyclists it's the same every Sunday!" then pulled over and jammed on the brakes.

Some of the KW's on the ride swerved onto the grass embankment but some poor sod went right through the back window. I'm told that there was glass on the front dashboard and that the driver had his young daughter in the car.

The bike rider was put in an ambulance and had a neckbrace on.

The policewoman told some of our crew that the driver had only just got his license back and that she couldn't promise anything but he would probably end up in jail.

As i say, this is second hand so some of the details may be wrong, but in principle doesn't this make you feel sick to your stomach?

Be careful out there folks, there are nutters about.

Chris

I spoke to a Twickenham Club member, think he was an organiser at the HQ, who said the Corsa driver had only had his licence back a couple of weeks and that the residents of the terrace overlooking the crash were very supportive, giving statements etc. Here's hoping the driver gets put away.

Cathy and Kirsty were riding along in single file when some a**e in a corsa tried to take them out, he swerved hard towards the kerb and slammed his brakes on and some poor other cyclist on the rumble who he overtook to do this went into his back window, getting a broken hand and facial injuries which required an ambulance trip. The Corsa driver having done his best to kill someone got out of his car and started ranting about cyclists taking up too much space on the road. Someone from the houses near by said he had only just got his license back. The police and ambulance staff were very good but it was a nasty incident.

Heard that the cyclist broke his jaw but that he was up and talking to his wife on the phone- again from the same source.

Actually that last piece might not be accurate- talking with a broken jaw, is that possible?

Lets hope the injured have a speedy recovery...

Regarding the corsa a**e, hopefully he gets the same justice as this guy in the states got earlier this year (5 years in the clink!)

http://articles.latimes.com/2010/jan/11/opinion/la-oew-mionske12-2010jan12

On the subject of car/cycle rage, we experienced a larger than usual amount of horn honking and general driver stupidity today... do you think there is a correlation between the number of cyclist out on the road today and the number of 'incidents' Question

Jesus - that's a close one given what could have happened.

Otherwise, a cracking day's riding. Thanks, chaps. Smile
