Women’s MTB skills day

Following the increase of mountain bike activity in the club, we have decided to subsidise a ladies-only mountain bike skills training session if there is sufficient demand.

Danny Clifford has been liaising with Richard Kelly of All Biked Up to sort something out. Richard is a very good teacher and several club members have already benefited from his training. He operates in the Surrey hills, near Peaslake, and often starts his lessons at the carpark in Felday Glade which is in Holmbury St Mary. The course will be aimed at beginners but Richard should be able to help with any specific issues you have.

The date has yet to be confirmed but depends on availability of participants and Richard.

We need a minimum of 4 riders but but any number from 3 – 18 is realistic. Groups will be split into manageable sizes with a maximum ratio of 6 riders to each instructor. The 4 hour skills builder sessions are priced at £60 per rider (minimum 4 riders) and Kingston Wheelers have agreed to pay 50% of this – the only stipulation is,obviously you have to be a memeber of KW – so four hours skills training for £30” says Danny.

2012 club time trial series

We have a special season-long time trial competition based around a series of designated TT events. Points are awarded, from 10 down to 1, for the first 10 riders in each event. Your best six rides will count for the trophy so you don’t have to ride every event. But participation often counts more than speed to rack up points. Remember, the aim of the series is to have fun and to pick events for us all to ride together, this is firstly a way for members to have a common calendar of races, it’s not just about collecting the trophy at the end of the year.

Enter now

The full list of 2012 races will be online soon once Cycling Time Trials publish the season’s calendar of races but the first event is the Redhill CC Sporting 18 on Sunday 19 February.

More info on how to enter the Redhill race is on the forum.

Membership renewals for 2012

Club membership is for 12 months when ever you join but it used to be from January-December so many had their membership expiring at the end of last year. If this is the case for you (you’ve probably got a renewal notice by email too) and want to remain a member, please be sure to renew your membership so you can keep doing the club run and more.

Note that if your membership lapsed in December and you decided to renew in, say, February that your membership period would be the day the membership lapsed and not the day you renewed.

Annual General Meeting

The club’s annual general meeting (AGM) is going to be held on Monday 6 February and starting promptly at 8.00 pm so aim to arrive around 7.30 pm if possible.

The location is the Druid’s Head pub in Kingston, the full address is 3 Market Place, Kingston Upon Thames, KT1 1JT.

In the meantime if you have any thoughts for the club and the way it is run now is the time to share them with the club’s management committee. Either get in touch with someone directly or email info@kingstonwheelers.com.

Note the existing rules of the club require you to submit any items you’d like to go on the agenda before Monday 16 January, one week away. One item for the meeting is a new set of rules that have been prepared by the committee with the expert help of member Phil Ember.

In due course an agenda for the AGM will be circulated with a copy of the proposed new rules and any other changes.

There will be an “any other business” area for discussion where you can raise ideas during the AGM itself but if you have any ideas that require reflection or preparation before the meeting, now is the time to act.

Anderson 4th in national CX champs

Anthony Anderson

Second in the national road championships, aka the National Youth Circuit Championships in 2011, Anthony Anderson took fourth place in the U=14 youth category cyclo-cross national championships on Saturday. A strong start saw him rival eventual winner and favourite Darren Tullet as shown in the picture above.

Fourth place would be excellent any day but as well as school, Anthony has been spending a lot of time swimming and so there are potential improvements to be made for the cycling and a big win is within his reach very soon. Well done to Anthony.

Sporting 14 time trial

The club organises the Gil Jessop Sporting 14 time trial every year. This year’s race is on Sunday 12 February.

Full details of the race – the course, entry details etc – will be made available in due course. Every club member is encouraged to take part, from those aiming to win a prize to those who just want to try and complete the course.

But the race needs your help to be a success and above all to make the race safe for those taking part. This means we need volunteers and all help is gratefully received. This can take the form of helping on the day or baking a cake to sell to hungry competitors on the day.

In particular anyone who is racing in club colours this year should feel a duty to help. Race organiser Nicola Wadham needs plenty of help to ensure all goes well. Please email her at nicolawadham @ hotmail.com with KW 14 in the header to volunteer for marshalling.

Club race fund

A reminder that the deadline to submit any claims is Friday 13 January.

The club is offering members who race a partial refund of their entrance fees. It’s a way to support those flying the club colours in competitive events. Road races (eg BC, LVRC) and CTT time trials count, but not sportives or triathlon.

The total has been increased to £1500 and those entering the nationals and premier calendar races get 100% of these fees repaid and the rest is a proportion of however much is claimed.

If you want the maths then you divide the pot of money by the total value of entry fees claimed by everyone and multiply the result by your claim. For example if you submit a claim for £50 and everyone’s claims come to £3000 then £1500 / £3000 = 0.5 so you will get half back.

The funds are only available if you have helped the club this year, for example marshaling in a race or other supportive duties. Be sure to mention how you’ve helped your club this year.

As usual we will want to see proof that you started and finished the race, it normally won’t count if you were DNF on the day.

And if under £10 is owed, then it will be ignored to reduce the administrative burden. Also it is for full members of the club with valid membership for 2012.

To make your claim download the template spreadsheet and send your completed form to club treasurer Will Meers or the club’s info@ inbox by 13 January 2011. Finally please put your bank details on the spreadsheet.

NSPCC thank-you letter

The club has been sponsored by the NSPCC for the last three years. Although this was a reverse form of sponsorship where the club offered up valuable space on the website and club clothing in order to help the NSPCC. In addition members could opt to make a donation of £5 when joining or renewing.

This has now ended and at last year’s AGM it was decided not to renew this. The agreement was managed by Nick Hussey and he explains more:

It was intended that there would be a great deal of communication between the club and charity, so that we could help out with their cycling fundraising events and they could let us know how our donations were being used. Unfortunately my original contact left shortly after we began and it became difficult to continue communication. Poor charity funding mean a high turnover of staff and a very high workload at most charities, and this was evident here too. Communication has improved greatly of late, but sadly only at the end of the three year term.

Claire Arnott of NSPCC fundraising (met via a Childline Lands’s End to John O’Groats event) has sent a lovely note thanking all our members for their support over the last few years.

Thank you all for your support and donations. If you would like to get in touch with the NSPCC or Childline about any form of support, feedback, advice or sponsorship, or would like any general advice about approaching charities about agreements please do contact me

You can download the NSPCC’s letter (PDF) to read.

2012 dates

It’s not 2012 yet but three dates for your diary already:

  • Monday 6 February – Annual General Meeting (provisional)
  • Sunday 12 February – Sporting 14 – Gil Jessop Memorial time trial
  • Sun 11 March – club Surrey League road races

The annual general meeting is the formal occasion to review how the club is run, to review the year past and to have your say on the future direction of the club. The 2011 AGM prompted some debate afterwards, largely from members who did not attend. This time be sure to sure up if you’re interested.

The other two dates concern two races run by the club. If you plan to race this year you must help out in one or both of these events. Remember the local calendar of races full of events run by other clubs and there are no professional promoters. Instead every club and its membership help to put on a few races. Just as you expect to take part in races run by other clubs, local cyclists are counting on the club to run safe and organised races and this only happens if you get involved. It’s three hours on a Sunday, do it and you can race for the season of the season.
