Introducing...
Every month, we introduce some of the Kingston Wheelers. But occaisonally we get someone from outside the club. We've had pro riders like Stuart O'Grady and Kristian House, now it's the turn of radio presenter Robert Elms. He hosts the Robert Elms Show from 12.00 - 3.00 pm on BBC Radio's London station, 94.9FM. A music afficionado, his show has a mix of ececltic music and talk. He'a a keen cyclist as you'll see below. Thanks to Ian Humphreys for the interview.
Name: Robert Elms
Age: 49
Significant others: Wife, Alice, Alfie, Maude and QPR FC.
What made you start cycling?Ridden round town since student days, but five year ago had a go on a mates Colnago and was hooked.
What bike do you ride? Classic Roberts road frame with full Campag bits.
Give us a brief cycling historyBeen a city cyclist all my life, took to road riding rather than any other form of mid-life crisis. I now see it as the perfect way to keep fit, drool over nice kit and enjoy banter with good mates.
What was your best performance or ride?Completing a stage of the Tour de France two years ago, with lots of help.
What was your worst day on the bike? Various broken bits and blood on the streets of London. But I love almost every day on the bike.
Any favourite pro or inspiration? A new Rapha jersey always inspires me to get out there. An early morning phone call from my bike Buddies Ben and Gary also does the trick. I also like to think I'm just a little bit Belgian.
Where is your favourite cycling location? Regents Park is where I cycle most, and the north London Alps (Highgate West Hill) but I have a house in Andalucia with great rides combining hills and sea.
Most likely to say: "I'll do the Etape next year".
Least likely to say: "Can't we go little faster up hills"?
